Ah, the concessions stand. Much maligned by movie-goers, opting rather to starve their way through two hours of previews and runtime rather than subject themselves to the controlled economy inside the theater, the snack shop is not without its relative bargains. Yes, stocking yourself with adequate food and drink is will likely cost you more than the price of admission itself (depending on the theater and show time, of course), but if you do decide to break the bank and succumb to a hankering, it’s best to get the most bang for your buck.When ordering popcorn or beverages at the movie theater, there is one cardinal rule of thumb that prevails even above your perceived notions of rational human consumption. The tub of popcorn may look large enough to bathe a toddler and perhaps the large drink could cure a camel’s thirst, no matter, the bigger the better. Why waste money on popcorn and soda you stand little chance of finishing? Value.In the world of marked up prices, an extra 50 to 75 cents to upgrade the full scale from small to large will often net 2 to 3 times as much popcorn. The standard small sized bag is little more than a few handfuls, with medium only offering marginal improvement. Similarly, a small drink is one built-in straw and handle away from a kiddie cup. Save Money at the Theater

Though buying or watching a movie at home is almost always a cheaper alternative, there are plenty of ways to save a few extra dollars by cutting back on exorbitantly high movie prices. Ticket prices will vary depending on where you live, sometimes north of 10 just to get in the theater, so follow these tips to help cut back your spending or get more back for your several bucks.Bring Deep Pockets or a Big Bag Unlike airport security, you most likely won’t be subject to much screening when it comes time for the theater. The ticket checker is likely your only major obstacle in avoiding the concession counter yet still enjoying a snack and beverage filled viewing experience. Loose clothing or simply a purse can easily conceal a bottled soda and boxed snack size items. Unfortunately, a tub’s worth of popcorn is a very difficult item to conceal unless you’re wearing bag-lined Hammer Pants, so if you can’t sit through a movie without the cinema’s classic staple be prepared for another 6.50.Make the Matinee Evening and night movies are more popular than earlier shows, thus as demand rises so does the price. Schedule your movie theater trip for an open afternoon and keep and extra 2 to 4 bucks per ticket, varying by theater. (more…)
